Scootaround
Helps Restore Mobility To CMT Patient
-Clarence Vincent Foundation Work with Charcot-Marie-Tooth
Association Patient- CHICAGO,
IL – July 29, 2007 – Michigan resident Carol
Simpson, who suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder,
came to Chicago to regain her mobility. She was the
first recipient of an electric scooter provided free
of charge through a partnership with Scootaround, the
Clarence Vincent Foundation, and the Charcot-Marie-Tooth
Association (CMTA).
For
nearly 60 years Ms. Simpson has been afflicted with
CMT, an inherited peripheral neuropathy that causes
muscle wasting and can severely limit a person’s
mobility. She wears braces on both legs for support
and is at the point where it is impossible for her to
operate a wheelchair.
The
scooter was presented to Ms. Simpson with representatives
present from Scootaround and the CMTA Board of Directors
at a ceremony in the Sears Tower, 33rd Floor Conference
Center at 1 p.m.
"We
are always looking for ways to offer additional services,"
said CMTA Executive Director Charles F. Hagins, "and
our partnership with the Clarence Vincent Foundation
will give us an extraordinary opportunity to help restore
freedom and independence to a few of the many people
severely affected by CMT."
"We
understand the needs of an organization with varying
levels of resources", said Lee Meagher, President
and CEO of Scootaround, "and we are proud to partner
with the CMTA and help people affected by CMT move around
with added control, comfort and self-confidence."
CMT is found world-wide in all races and ethnic groups.
Although discovered in 1886 by three physicians (Jean-Martin-Charcot,
Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth), CMT remains misunderstood
and often misdiagnosed. It is estimated that approximately
2.5 million people in the United States are affected
by CMT.
