Whether you dream of discovering the Old South in Atlanta, exploring its Civil Rights era history, or prefer seeking out attractions such as the world’s largest indoor aquarium or the World of Coca-Cola, there’s plenty to occupy your time in Atlanta. Because the culinary scene in the city is fantastic, you’ll want to pack your stretchy pants. There is of course lots of delicious Southern food on offer, but because Atlanta is such a multi-cultural city, you’ll also discover a range of world cuisines available.
Here are four of the city’s most popular attractions:
This is just a sample of the many interesting attractions that Atlanta offers, and Scootaround will help you enjoy these, and many more in the city. To find out more about wheelchair and mobility scooter rentals in Atlanta, call us at 1-888-441-7575 or email us to find out more.
If you are driving to Atlanta and have a disability parking permit from another state or country, you do not need to apply for a temporary permit during your stay. Georgia honors non-expired disability placards and plates from other states and countries. If you require a temporary permit, you may apply at any Georgia DOR center. Alternatively, valet parking is available at most hotels. Disability placards/permits or tags from any state allow you to park in any parking space designated for a disabled person.
This seriously impressive attraction is a must-see when visiting Atlanta. The Georgia Aquarium is located right downtown and is the largest indoor aquarium in the world (it serves as a 10 million gallon water home for over 100,000 animals). One of the tanks contains four huge whale sharks, four manta rays, and schools of brightly coloured fish, and you’ll also find gorgeous exhibits of jellyfish and many other species, and dolphin and sea-otter encounters that you can participate in.
The Georgia Aquarium prides itself on making the experiences that it offers available to everyone. The touch pool in the Cold Water Quest gallery has a special wheelchair access entry, elevators are available to take guests to all floors and staff will assist with providing guests in wheelchairs an experience similar to everyone else. With more than 12,000 square feet of viewing windows, an electric scooter or wheelchair will ensure that you are able to explore as much of the aquarium as possible.
Those with an interest in Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr Martin Luther King will love visiting this National Historic Site where you can explore buildings relevant to his life, including his boyhood home, the Ebenezer Baptist Church where his career began, and his final resting place. Visitors to the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site will hear King’s story through a number of interpretive exhibits, and no doubt be moved as they learn more about this great man.
The Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site is entirely wheelchair accessible. The theater has wheelchair spaces, the church and home of Martin Luther King has wheelchair entrances and the sidewalks are paved for wheelchairs.
It may seem strange to have an attraction based on a soft-drink, but at World of Coca-Cola there’s plenty of fun stuff to do, and the opportunity to sample more than 60 Coca-Cola products from around the world at the end of the attraction your (prepare for a major sugar-rush). Besides having a huge number of historical exhibits, visitors can check out the on-site bottling plant, try their hand at mixing up their own soft-drink formula, pose for a photo with the Coca-Cola bear, and enjoy an awesome 4D theatre experience. The gift-shop at this attraction is pretty special too.
The attraction is fully accessible, and includes accessible parking, so you’ll have no trouble getting to enjoy every part of World of Coca-Cola. There are a number of wheelchairs available from guest-services, but you are welcome to bring your own wheelchair or scooter.
As one of the South’s biggest art museums, you’ll find a huge collection of art spanning a vast geographical area and time period at the High Museum of Art. There are more than 11,000 pieces art collected in the museum, and you’ll find everything from classic paintings by the likes of Monet to African art and folk art housed in the permanent collection. There are always interesting visiting exhibits to explore too. Visit on a Friday evening and you’ll be able to enjoy live jazz with a glass of wine, but there’s a great little café and gourmet restaurant specializing in farm-to-table dining on site too.
All areas of the High Museum of Art are accessible, and there are a limited number of wheelchairs available for visitors to use (on a first-come first-served basis). Special tours for those with physical disabilities can be arranged by contacting the museum in advance of your visit.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
