If you are driving to Boston and have a disability-parking permit from another state or country, you do not need to apply for a temporary permit during your stay. Massachusetts honors non-expired disability placards and plates from other states and countries. If you require a temporary permit, you may apply at any Massachusetts DMV center. Alternatively, valet parking is available at most hotels and many restaurants throughout the city.
Starting at Boston Commons, visitors can follow a two and a half mile redbrick trail that showcases the history of the city through the centuries. Following the trail takes you to museums, historically important meeting houses, parks, ships, and the US’s oldest bar, the Bell in Hand Tavern. Expect the trail to take two to three hours, or more if you spend a while in the tavern.
For an enhanced experience, you can opt to join a fun guided tour along the Freedom Trail, where you’ll be escorted by knowledgeable guides decked out in period attire. There are also pizza tours you can join, should you be equally interested in exploring the city’s best slice as you are its history.
The trail is accessible, and there’s an alternate easier route should you need it. Renting a mobility scooter or wheelchair from Scootaround will ease any concerns avoid any issues you might have following the trail (there are a few steep inclines along the way). We can deliver mobility equipment straight to your hotel in Boston, and with your scooter or wheelchair ready and waiting, you’re good to go as soon as you arrive in the city.
Located in a charming cobblestone promenade, Faneuil Hall dates back from 1742, and is a great spot to shop, eat, explore, and be entertained by top-notch street performers. Definitely a tourist hot-spot, Faneuil Hall can get crowded but is definitely worth visiting a there are historical attractions within such as the armory and museum, and this is a great place to pick up crafts and souvenirs.
Although the hall has been a market and meeting place since it was built there have been many modifications over the years, including the addition of three more buildings (North Market, South Market, and Quincy Markey) which gave additional spaces that operate as an indoor/ outdoor mall and food hall. Look for the gilded grasshopper weathervane on top of the hall – it is the only part of the building to remain completely untouched since 1742. The entire area is accessible, with wheelchairs ramps and elevators throughout.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Boston for a game, then Fenway Park is a must, and baseball fans will probably want to stop in at this iconic stadium even if the Red Sox aren’t in town and take advantage of one of the 50-minute tours offered there. If you do go, be sure to head to the Bleacher Bar (under the bleachers in center field) for a beer and one of their award winning sandwiches.
If you are attending a Red Sox game, there are accessible spaces for wheelchair users located throughout the stadium. The Fenway Park tours are also fully accessible and guests with access concerns do not need to schedule tours in advance.
For more than 40 years, the New England Aquarium has been a world leader in marine conservation, and has educated and entertained the public with its excellent displays. The fun Penguinology exhibit is home to more than 80 birds and three different species, there are of course many tanks full of fish and underwater life (including a giant ocean tank and shark touch tanks). There are also adorable and entertaining seals, and exhibits showing local marine life. You’ll find a wide variety of special programs and activities listed on their website to help you plan your visit.
Wheelchair users will be happy to know that access to the aquarium is free from them, and there are virtually no areas within that they won’t be able to access.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
