Along with its amazing nightlife and dining experiences, Austin boasts plenty of world-class historical attractions that chart the dramatic history of the state. The city also has some truly beautiful parks and nearby nature reserves to explore. If sports are more your thing, Austin is home to the Texas Longhorns and Austin Spurs basketball teams. There’s something for everyone in this awesome city. First time visitors to Austin might want to check out some of these accessible attractions when they visit.
Disabled parking permits from other states and countries are honored in Texas, so your existing permits will allow you to adhere to the same rules and regulations as locals with similar permits. Interestingly, this means that metered parking is free in the city for people with disabled permits, and there are no time limits on the time zones for city-maintained parking. There is plenty of disabled parking available at attractions, hotels, restaurants, and parks in the city, so you should have little trouble finding a good parking spot wherever you go.
This National Historic Monument is a must see when visiting Austin. The State Capitol is huge, impressive, and ornate inside and out. Take an organized tour to learn about the history of the Capitol, or take a more specialized tour that discusses trailblazing Texan women, heroes of the Texan revolution, or ghosts in the building (held throughout October). There’s plenty to see, and 22 acres of grounds and monuments to explore too. Visitors can also tour the newly restored Texas Governor’s Mansion for free (though you need to make a reservation in advance).
All facilities at the State Capitol are accessible, and visitors who have a valid disabled parking pass may park for free at any meter in the Capitol Complex. Because there’s a lot of ground to cover at the State Capitol and Visitors Center, a mobility device will make it a lot easier to get around and see everything that you want to. There are a limited number of wheelchairs available on site, which are supplied to visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.
Locals and visitors alike flock to this beautiful green space not only for the impressive gardens (there are 30 acres of themed gardens, including a peaceful Japanese garden complete with waterfalls and zen spaces), but also for the many other attractions there. The Zilker Hillside Theatre puts on the Zilker Summer Musical every year, which is a wonderful free performance. There are sculpture gardens and rose gardens, a miniature railway, a pool, and many more lovely places to discover.
While you shouldn’t have trouble navigating around the gardens or attractions, there is a lot of space to cover, and having a wheelchair or scooter rental arranged in advance will help you get the most out of your visit.
This huge and modern museum tells the story of Texas through excellent interactive exhibits that are plotted throughout spacious galleries. There is also an on-site IMAX theatre that showcase movies about Texas history, along with a variety of classic and contemporary movies. The museum covers everything from Native Americans and the natural landscape, to ranching, explorers, and notable Texans throughout history.
The museum was designed to be as accessible as possible, and architects went above and beyond to create spaces that make it easy for everyone to move through. Visiting the museum with a scooter or electric wheelchair is a breeze, and there are a number of accessible parking spaces in the museum’s accessible parking garage (parking costs $8 for a full day).
History buffs could happily lose themselves in the LBJ Presidential Library for weeks, as the building houses 45 million pages of historic documents that highlight the career of America’s 36th president and those who worked alongside him. The Library is also home to a number of exciting exhibits – including one outlining LBJ’s decisions surrounding the Vietnam War – as well as interactive exhibits showcasing the legislation passed in his term and how it affects our lives today. There’s a reproduction of the Oval Office, LBJ’s presidential limousine, and a lot of other interesting stuff to check out while you’re there.
The LBJ Presidential Library is accessible to wheelchair users, with elevators in the central lobby giving access to all floors. There are also accessible washrooms on the lower floor. There are a limited number of wheelchairs available for visitor use, which are supplied on a first-come, first-served basis at the lobby information desk.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
