The Strand

The Strand is a historic district in downtown Galveston that is renowned for its well-preserved Victorian buildings, unique shops, fabulous art galleries, and plentiful restaurants. Many of the buildings here are more than a hundred years old, providing visitors with a fascinating glimpse into Galveston’s past. Because of its central location, the Strand is one of the most popular and easily accessible tourist attractions within the city. The area is also home to some of the city’s best museums, including the Galveston Railroad Museum, Galveston Naval Museum, and Texas Seaport Museum.

Given the historic nature of the Strand District, many of the streets and sidewalks are not designed with accessibility in mind, and visitors may find it difficult to traverse the area on foot or with a manual wheelchair. Moody Gardens

Moody Gardens is a sprawling facility on Galveston Island that features a variety of attractions and exhibits. If you’re looking to relax and enjoy nature, take a stroll through the park’s themed gardens, which showcase many different plant species and landscaped areas. One highlight is the Rainforest Pyramid, a huge facility which is designed to replicate (as the name suggests) a tropical rainforest. If you’re looking for something exciting to do with the whole family, pay a visit to the Palm Beach Water Park, which features a sandy beach, lazy river, and waterslides. Finish your day by visiting the Aquarium Pyramid or watching a show at the 3D theater!

The attractions at Moody Gardens are designed to be accessible for people with all levels of mobility. Manual wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis at both the Aquarium and the Visitor Center. Arrive early to ensure you get one or rent a mobility device in advance through Scootaround to save the hassle. Moody Gardens also has over 70 accessible parking spaces and wheelchair ramps throughout the facility.

Port of Galveston

While there is plenty to see and do in Galveston, many visitors prefer to leave the city behind and get out on the open ocean. The Port of Galveston is becoming an increasingly busy and popular port for cruises to the western Caribbean. Major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Disney, and Norwegian all have ships that sail out of the port, so pick the cruise that looks right for you and set sail on your next adventure. The Port of Galveston is located right next to the Strand and downtown area, making it easily accessible for visitors to the city.

The Port of Galveston provides wheelchairs for use during embarkation and disembarkation.
