Want to immerse yourself in cultural attractions or cheer on the Astros, the Rockets, or the Texans, sure, you can do that. If you’re an art lover then enjoy the largest fine arts museum in the Southwest, or head to NASA ground control to learn about space exploration.
There’s so much to do Houston, but here are four attractions that should be on every first time visitor’s itinerary:
If you want to enjoy these and many more fine Houston attractions with no stresses regarding your mobility, reach out to us at 1-888-441-7575 or email us. Scootaround can fix you up with an electric wheelchair or scooter rental for your trip.
Part of Houston’s commitment to accessibility is concerned with making sure that there are enough fully accessible parking spaces in the city to meet residents and visitors needs. Spaces are marked, and cars displaying valid permits can park for free in metered spaces as long as they stay in the allotted times. Permits from other states and countries will be honored, but those coming to Houston to seek medical treatment can apply for a temporary permit.
When Neil Armstrong arrived on the moon in 1963 and said, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed,” this is where he was calling. Space Center Houston is the visitor center for a real NASA facility, and as well as being able to explore actual spacecraft offers unique experiences such as the possibility of lunching with an astronaut, various permanent and temporary exhibitions, and many opportunities to learn about space exploration.
This museum is amazing, and very popular with visitors. If you want to beat the crowds it is advisable to get there early, and book the tram tour and shuttle tour online before you go in order to skip the sometimes ridiculously long lines. Space Center Houston is committed to helping people with disabilities experience everything that they have to offer, so accessibility won’t be an issue when you visit. There are a limited number of wheelchairs available for guests to use, on a first come first served basis.
Art lovers could lose themselves for days amongst the permanent collections and visiting exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts, as this is one of the largest museums in the United States. Whether you’re into Warhol or Degas, you’re going to find something here to enjoy as there are more than 65,000 pieces of art dating from ancient times to now in the museum’s massive collection. Besides the excellent and extensive permanent collection, the museum showcases the best in traveling exhibits too, meaning that every visit there’s new art to see (though some of these exhibits sell out, and you may need to buy tickets in advance to ensure that you get to see them).
Whilst visiting you could take lunch at the MFA café, or else peruse the collection of Houston’s finest food trucks that are parked beside the Cullen Sculpture Garden every lunchtime – so you can sample local fare whilst absorbing all the artworks. Most areas of the Museum of Fine Arts are accessible, including the galleries, sculpture garden, shops, and café. There are a limited number of wheelchairs available for guests on a first come first served basis.
Enter this serene attraction and be transported to a tropical paradise where hundreds of butterflies flutter from one tropical plant to the next, and occasionally land on you too. The Cockrell Butterfly Center is part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, which is as a whole pretty cool anyway, and serves to educate you about all manner of other animals, bugs, and creepy crawlies as well while you’re there. Hundreds of different species of butterflies and other insects live in the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and it is a real treat to just be there watching them all in this beautiful habitat.
All areas of this attraction are accessible, and there are a limited number of wheelchairs available for guests to borrow while there. Because the Museum (and butterfly house) can get very busy, it is recommended that those with mobility issues get there as soon as possible after it opens at 9am to avoid crowds, and school groups, that might make it harder to get around.
Home to more than 6,000 animals, the Houston Zoo holds an impressive collection of birds, beasts, and more. Touring the Zoo you’ll see rhinos, elephants, big cats, orangutans, okapi, have the opportunity to feed the giraffes, and plenty of other animals big and small. To get a more personal experience of everything on offer at Houston Zoo you could sign up for a behind-the-scenes tour where you can meet the keepers and get closer to the animals, as well as learn about how the Zoo’s animal care team looks after their well-being.
Although the Zoo is accessible, it spans 55 acres, so you’re going to want to make sure your accessibility needs are covered. The Zoo does offer both wheelchair and motorized scooter rentals at its rental center. If you’re planning to spend the whole day at the Zoo, you’ll find several cafes where you can stop for a bite to eat and a refreshing drink or two.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
