So long as you have a state-issued disabled plate or permit from the state you live in, you shouldn’t have any trouble using accessible parking spaces in Indianapolis, of which there are many. You’ll also find disabled parking at all major attractions, as well as valet parking at some hotels and restaurants.
If you’re into NASCAR or any other form of auto racing, a visit to the hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a must. Taking a grounds tour will give you access to places normally only open to officials, such as the Gasoline Alley garages and Victory Lane. If you’re feeling daring, you can take part in one of the racing experiences on offer at the track. The Speedway is also home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, where you’ll find plenty of vintage winning race cars and motorbikes to drool over. The museum also houses interesting exhibits and photography galleries, along with two well-furnished gift shops where you can pick up a few souvenirs.
Accessibility is not an issue at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as all buildings and programs are made accessible to disabled visitors, including the buses used in the grounds tours. There’s free, accessible parking with plenty of ramps to help you get around the grounds and museum too.
This world-class museum specializes in the history of the Hoosier State, telling its story through exhibits of contemporary and historic items. There’s an ever-changing roster of exhibits where you’ll find everything from photography collections, to artifacts that define Indiana (such as Lincoln’s Mallet), many of which are on loan from other museums. You’ll also find plenty of ancient and paleontological relics to admire, along with a full, on-site IMAX theater. There are no shortage of things to explore on the three floors of this architecturally significant building.
The museum makes significant efforts to be accessible to all, so you should have no problem seeing everything that interests you. There is also accessible parking and a limited number of free-to-use wheelchairs available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Designed to inspire a love and appreciation of the West, this stunning museum showcases historically important art pieces from the likes of Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and many other significant American artists. You’ll see portraits of Native American people, horses, cowboys, and even cowboys’ dogs – this is a diverse museum to say the least. The galleries are expansive, housing impressive permanent collections along with temporary visiting exhibits. Plenty of special and seasonal events are also held at the Eiteljorg Museum, such as Christmas markets and guest speakers, so be sure to check the website prior to visiting.
The Eiteljorg Museum is fully accessible and should offer no challenge to those using a scooter or powerchair. Visitors with disabilities can also visit at the same discounted rate offered to community members, which is a nice touch. There is a limited supply of manual wheelchairs available for visitors to use at the front desk.
This zoo, aquarium, and botanical park is situated in the heart of the beautiful White River State Park. The huge selection of flora and fauna at the Indianapolis Zoo are organized into biomes, which are large areas where animals from similar zones are grouped together. If you want to do more than just look at the animals, Indianapolis Zoo offers two unique experiences: you can book an Animal Art Adventure where you get to visit with animal artists (yes, really, you can hang out with a penguin Picasso or a Rembrandt rhino) and take a piece of original artwork home; or you can try the Dolphin In-Water Adventure, where you can join the trainers in the water with the dolphins (this is the only place in the Midwest that you can do this).
There’s a lot of ground to cover at the Indianapolis Zoo, but you’ll have no problem doing it with an electric wheelchair or scooter, as the entire property is accessible. There are a limited number of wheelchairs and scooters available for rent inside the zoo on a first-come, first-served basis.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
