Arizona honors non-expired disability placards and plates from other states and countries. If you require a temporary permit, you may apply at any Arizona DMV center. Before you even enter the spectacular Desert Botanical Gardens, you’re greeted by beautiful Chihuly glasswork sculptures amongst cactus in a stunning display at the entrance. The 140 acres of gardens contain many artworks dispersed amongst the 50,000 plant displays, and is home to many native birds too. The gardens are a treat to explore, and showcase the natural beauty of the desert and the surprising variety of plants that are able to grow in these harsh conditions. The Desert Botanical Gardens are one of only 24 botanical gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, which is testament to how special they are.
The Desert Botanical Gardens is entirely wheelchair accessible. There are paved and dirt paths, both can easily be navigated on a wheelchair or scooter. The restrooms and concessions are accessible as well. Electric scooters and wheelchairs are available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis.
For anyone with an interest in Native history, a visit to the Heard Museum is a truly wonderful experience. The museum is dedicated to providing a sensitive and accurate portrayal of Native arts and cultures; the museum combines the stories of American Indian people into a compelling narrative through art. The inspired curating of the high quality pieces in its vast collections of art and artifacts has lead to the Heard Museum being recognized internationally for its work, and they contribute to much educational and cultural programming in the Phoenix area and beyond.
A visit to the Heard Museum includes 12 exhibition galleries, a free guided tour, outdoor sculpture gardens, a renowned café and a contemporary art gallery. The gift shop is also fantastic and offers lots of original arts and crafts from Native artists. With so much to see, an electric scooter or wheelchair will ensure you see as much of the Heard Museum as possible. The Heard Museum is entirely wheelchair accessible.
As the largest art museum in the southwestern United States, Phoenix Art Museum has more than 17,000 works of art covering many different styles, including Western American, American, Asian, European, fashion design, Latin American, contemporary, and modern. Browsing the galleries you’ll see plenty of famous works that you’ll already know – such as Gilbert Stuart’s 1796 portrait of George Washington, or pieces by Robert Henri and George Singleton Copley. While at the museum, grab a bite to eat at the museums restaurant, the Palette, and tour the lushly landscaped Sculpture Garden. The museum holds many special events and festivals throughout the year, so it is a good idea to check out the website in advance of your visit in order to plan accordingly.
The Phoenix Art Museum is accessible for those in wheelchairs or electric scooters. It does span a large area, so having an electric scooter or wheelchair will ensure you are able to see as much art as possible during your visit there.
The Phoenix Zoo is the largest privately owned, non-profit zoo in the United States. The Zoo is located in the Papago Park area of Phoenix and is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride. The zoo is divided into four main themed areas including, the Arizona Trail, the Tropics Trail, the Africa Trail, and the Children’s Trail. It also includes a sanctuary to care for animals that are endangered or unwanted. For those that want to get close to the animals, there are several interactive exhibits where you can pet a stingray or feed a giraffe.
With 1,400 animals on display and 4 km of walking trails, and electric scooter or wheelchair will ensure you see as much of the zoo as possible. The Phoenix Zoo is entirely wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. Be aware that due to crazy summer heat in Phoenix, the zoo closes early (at 2pm some days) so get there as early as possible in order to have the best experience, and trying to see all of it in one day can be intense if you aren’t used to the heat.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
