As the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C. offers visitors a lot to explore and the 2024 Cherry Blossom Festival is a great time to experience the city. The cherry blossom trees can be seen in three areas: around the tidal basin in West Potomac Park, in East Potomac Park (Hains Point) and on the Washington Monument Grounds.

The 2024 festival will offer both virtual and in-person experiences, including an opening ceremony on Saturday, March 23rd. The festival includes many new innovations designed to ensure the health, safety, and enjoyment of participants.

How Accessible Is the National Cherry Blossom Festival?

All the monuments are handicap accessible. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) and Martin Luther King (MLK) Memorials are on ground level, the Jefferson Memorial has an elevator (find it on the side of the building) and the Tidal Basin walkway is a single level path. If you are looking for accessible washrooms, the MLK, FDR and Jefferson Memorials are the three spots you can find them.

Washington D.C. is one of the most handicap accessible cities in the country. In fact, it was in D.C. that the US Congress recognized and established the rights of the disabled when it passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990!

Handicap Parking for the Cherry Blossom Festival

Accessible parking is designated at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt and World War II Memorials and near the Washington Monument and the Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, Korean War Veterans, and Vietnam Veterans Memorials.

Looking to get dropped off? There are two spots that provide room to safely load and unload and they are within 100 feet of the cherry blossoms. The first spot is next to the MLK/FDR Memorials along West Basin Drive, and the other is behind the Jefferson Memorial. Bonus: they have ramps to the water’s edge!

Disability placards/permits or tags from any state allow you to park in any parking space designated for a disabled person and park for double the posted time in any metered spaces without paying the meter. International visitors must apply for a Disability Parking Placard at any DMV service center. If your request is approved, you may be issued a one-week permit, a temporary placard or a long-term placard. There is no charge for a disability placard or permit.
