Visiting New York is an incredible experience. There are so many world-class attractions to see, great places to eat and drink at (from hot dogs at Coney Island to the very finest dining in Manhattan), museums and galleries to browse, shows to see, and sports venues to tour, that there’s no way you’ll fit it all into one trip. Making a plan in advance is useful (working out where your most important attractions are) and will help you conquer the city one district at a time. With that in mind, here are some of the city’s premier attractions paired with insider mobility information to help you formulate such a plan.
Scootaround rents mobility scooters and wheelchairs that will make it easier to see these and many more New York attractions. To find out more about our mobility equipment rentals, email us at [email protected] or give us a call at 1-888-441-7575.
If you are driving to New York City and have a disability parking permit from another state or country, you do not need to apply for a temporary permit during your stay. New York honors non-expired disability placards and plates from other states and countries. If you require a temporary permit, you may apply at your local agency. Disabled Parking Permits are issued locally, not by the DMV. You’ll also find that valet parking available at most hotels in the city. Disability placards/permits or tags from any state allow you to park in any parking space designated for a disabled person.
In the middle of New York Harbor, on Liberty Island, stands the 305ft Statue of Liberty. “The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Beautiful and certainly iconic, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Lady Liberty from the air if flying into New York, but a proper visit is highly recommended. If you were to enter the museum, pedestal or crown, you must secure an advanced reservation. Grounds tickets may be purchased during the visit.
Liberty Island is accessible to people who use mobility devices. Some parts of the Statue are accessible. For those with reservations to enter the monument, wheelchair access is provided to the museum and the exterior of Fort Wood. The interior of the top of the pedestal, which offers views of the Statue’s inner skeletal structure, is wheelchair accessible but unfortunately you won’t be able to access the outdoor observation deck or balcony if using a wheelchair or scooter.
Central Park is a 843-acre urban planning masterpiece in the middle of Manhattan, and stands as the most famous and beloved urban park in the world. Every year 40 million people visit Central Park to experience one of America’s greatest works of art. Inside the park you’ll find the Central Park Zoo and Wildlife Centre, catch and release fishing, a carousel, and numerous other unique and varied activities. There’s always something to do in Central Park- everything from fun family activities and free public programming, to hobbies and sports.
Central Park is open 364 days a year, 6 am till 1 am. Central Park has miles of wheelchair-accessible trails and scenic areas, including the famed Strawberry Fields. Half of the restrooms in Central Park are wheelchair accessible. There are lots of organized tours you can join too that will showcase everything from movie locations in the park to architectural curiosities.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the United States and home to millions or art pieces and artifacts spanning hundreds and in some cases even thousands of years. It is open 7 days a week and offers hundreds of events and programs each month so be sure to check the website to find out what’s happening there while you’re visiting. There are also cafes and fine dining restaurants to enjoy at the Met, so you can plan to spend a day there.
With a permanent collection divided among 17 departments and spread through a grand and spacious building, an electric scooter or wheelchair will ensure you see as much of the Museum as possible. The Museum is accessible to wheelchair users with accessible entrances and elevators throughout the building.
Absolutely crazy, extremely busy, but lots of fun, Times Square is a must when visiting New York. Time Square is the busiest theatre district in the world, and is also home to MTV, ABC, B.B Kings, Hard Rock Café, Best Buy Theater, and Madame Tussauds. You’ll also find local legends such as the Naked Cowboy who roams the square strumming his guitar wearing only a hat, tighty-whities and cowboy boots, and his competition the Naked Cowgirl ready for photo ops as well as numerous other street performers. Times Square is an international icon and universe in miniature, reflecting the obsessions, desires and priorities of a changing world.
The attractions in Time Square are wheelchair accessible however the streets are ridiculously crowded at times (going earlier in the day can help avoid this causing access problems). It will be helpful to have someone with you just in case you find yourself in need of assistance. As well, parking is scarce, so it’s best to plan for parking or transportation ahead of time.
Once an event has started, no further pre-reservations will be available. Please see the attendant at the onsite booth location to book a walk-up rental.
