You can’t really say you’ve explored San Antonio if you haven’t spent time along River Walk, a five-mile long pedestrian walkway lined with restaurants and boutiques that takes you through the heart of the city. There’s a great mix of casual and fine dining restaurants serving up everything for Texan/ Mexican to Italian to Seafood and Steaks, and lots of patios for you to sit out on and eat while you enjoy those gorgeous warm Texas evenings. There’s also plenty of entertainment, from live music and theatre to festivals and more, located along River Walk.

Although River Walk runs a story below the city, pretty much the whole area is accessible thanks to a series of elevators and ramps installed along the route (there’s a handy map to help you plan your time there). Most restaurants and other buildings, even those dating back way before accessibility was a consideration, are able to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters, so your trip won’t be impeded by your need to use one.

Wandering the beautiful San Antonio Botanical Garden gives you a sense of what blooms and thrives in the different temperate zones of Texas, and there are waterfalls and plenty of shaded areas to make this pleasant even on hotter days. There are rose gardens, Japanese gardens, and multiple greenhouses to explore. Interesting features in the exhibits, such as the rustic wood cabin in the Piney Woods area elevate this from just being another pretty garden, and if you are someone that loves botany or bird watching there are guided tours available that cover both of these interests.

The onsite bistro offers lovely lunches, and you can either sit inside if you need to enjoy a little AC or go out on the patio. In terms of getting around, the garden is accessible, and you should no trouble navigating every part of it with a scooter or wheelchair should you line one up with Scootaround in advance of your trip (there are 38 acres to explore, this is advisable).

Housed in the old Lone Star Brewery, the San Antonio Museum of Art has a fabulous collection of ancient Mediterranean, Latin American, and Asian art, as well as plenty of more modern pieces too. Besides an impressive permanent collection, there are always fascinating visiting exhibits showcases both contemporary and classical art. You’ll also find surprising exhibits such as weaponry from ancient civilizations and religious artifacts that take this way beyond what you’d find at art museums elsewhere. The conversion of this classic San Antonio building was very well done and the huge galleries showcase the art very well indeed.

Located on the River Walk, the San Antonio Museum of Art is easy to get to and fully accessible to the mobility impaired. The security desk does have a very limited number of wheelchairs available for use on a first-come first-served basis. Bonus: Entry the Museum is free on Tuesdays from 4 – 9pm, and on Sunday mornings from 10am-12pm.
